Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Torn Between Two Lovers, curated by Katharina Fritsch, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street. The fourth in a series of artist-curated summer exhibitions at Matthew Marks Gallery, this exhibition seeks to explore the space between painting and photography and will include work by Peter Josef Abels, Hans Brandli and Pia Fries, Andreas Gursky, Birgit Jensen, Herbert Koller, Alexej Koschkarow, Michael van Oven, Sigmar Polke, Gerhardt Richter, Thomas Ruff, Christoph Steinmeyer, as well as Fritsch herself. Katharina Fritsch has brought together the work of these thirteen artists to investigate the way in which painting and photography inform each other through a variety of media, including silkscreens, lithographs, and photographs printed in a variety of techniques. Fritsch has said, "without becoming nostalgic for the painting of the eighties, I think that now, through photography, which was so strong in the nineties, painting has become possible again."
